Capital flow: how much money did you put into buys?

Written by Niklas Klamm

The capital flow is available with a Plus or Investor subscription.

The capital flow shows how much money you put into buys and got back from sells each month. This lets you see, for example, how regularly you invest.

Where do I find the capital flow?

  1. Open your portfolio, a view or the Overview.

  2. Click “Analysis” in the sidebar.

  3. Open the “Capital” tab.

Capital flow table in Parqet’s analysis with total, average and monthly values per year

What does the table show?

  • Each cell is a month: buys minus sells in that month. Positive values (blue) mean you bought more than you sold. Negative values (orange) mean you sold more.

  • Total: the sum for the year.

  • Avg.: the average per month in the year. Only months in which your portfolio already existed count.

  • Σ: the sum across all years, per column (in the “Avg.” column, the average across all months).

  • With “Q” and “M” in the top right, you switch between quarters and months.

Below the table, a chart shows the same values as bars. With “3M”, “6M”, “1Y”, “YTD” and “MAX”, you choose how many months the chart shows.

What counts and what doesn’t?

  • Buys and sells count at their purchase price or sale proceeds, excluding fees and taxes.

  • Not included: transfers in and transfers out (for example a brokerage account transfer), dividends, interest, deposits and withdrawals on cash holdings, and canceled activities.

  • The capital flow always covers the entire lifetime of your portfolio. The period you select in the dashboard doesn’t change it.

You find the individual buys and sells via “View individual activities” in the top right.

Capital flow and cashflow are not the same

The Cashflow in the returns table in the dashboard is the sum of your deposits minus withdrawals on your cash holdings. The capital flow here counts buys minus sells. More on this: Dashboard metrics
