How are activities in foreign currencies converted?

Written by Niklas Klamm

If your portfolio contains activities that aren’t in the portfolio currency, Parqet uses the currency’s exchange rate on the date of each activity.

Which currencies are available? You can choose from more than 40 currencies, for example EUR, USD, CHF, GBP, JPY, CAD, AUD, DKK, NOK, SEK and PLN. This applies to the portfolio currency and to individual activities.

Changing the portfolio currency: In the portfolio, click the gear icon “Settings” in the top right. Under “General”, choose the “Portfolio currency” and click “Save changes”. Parqet then converts all prices, dividends and activities into this currency, including announced dividends.

Choosing the currency of an activity: In the “Add new activity” form, click the currency next to the “Price” or “Total” field and choose a different one. For cash holdings, you find the selection next to the “Amount” field.

For the activities of a cash holding, however, you can change the currency of the holding. In this case, the individual activities created in the holding’s currency are not converted on the day of the activity.

If the portfolio currency differs from the holding’s currency, the total cash balance is converted from the holding’s currency into the portfolio currency at the current daily rate.

Example for a euro portfolio with activities in US dollars

Buy (January 1, 2020): Apple stock in USD: The activity is converted into euros at the exchange rate on the day of the buy (daily rate of January 1, 2020).

Deposit: (January 1, 2020) of USD 1,000 to a cash holding in EUR: The activity is converted into euros at the respective exchange rate (daily rate of January 1, 2020).

Deposit: (January 1, 2020) of USD 1,000 to a cash holding in USD: The total cash balance is converted into euros at the current exchange rate (today’s).

You change the currency of a cash holding in the holding’s settings: Open the cash holding’s page. Click the three dots “⋯” in the top right and then “Manage”. Under “Currency”, choose the currency you want.
