How do I create a reference account?

Written by Niklas Klamm

A reference account mirrors your asset transactions in an account. Example: If you buy stocks for €10,000, these €10,000 are deducted from the reference account accordingly. Parqet books dividends paid out as a deposit to the account.

You can decide for yourself whether you want to use this feature.

How to create a reference account:

In the dashboard, you can first create a cash holding if you haven't created one yet:

Dashboard with the securities table; below it, an arrow points to the link for creating a cash holding in the empty Cash section

If you now want to turn the cash holding into a reference account, proceed as follows:

Cash table with the three-dot menu of a cash holding open; arrows point to the three dots and to the entry Manage

Click the three dots “⋯” next to the cash holding and then “Manage”. Under “Reference account for”, check the asset classes the account should apply to. The selection only applies to this portfolio. You can choose from:

The reference account also applies to your past activities: Parqet retroactively books all buys, sells and dividends of the selected assets to it. Parqet includes taxes and fees in this. If you buy a share for €100 and pay a €5 fee, €105 is deducted from the account. For sells and dividends, Parqet books the amount after taxes and fees. For each asset class, only one cash holding can be the reference account.

My sale proceeds don't end up in the reference account – what can I do?

When you sell a position, the proceeds should automatically end up in your reference account. If that doesn't happen, the reference account usually isn't activated for the affected asset class.

Click the three dots on the right next to the cash holding and then “Manage”. Make sure the box is checked for the asset class you want to use the account as a reference account for (e.g. securities, cryptocurrencies, precious metals).

Edit cash holding dialog with name, currency and the asset class checkboxes under Reference account for

What does the “Generate transfers” button do?

You'll find the button in the same dialog (“Manage”) below the checkboxes. The feature makes sure your reference account doesn't go negative – useful if you don't want to maintain your deposits manually but still want your numbers to be plausible.

How it works: For every buy that the reference account can't cover, the feature creates a deposit for the missing amount, one hour before the buy. With “Delete generated transfers”, you remove them again.

Examples:

  • Empty account, first buy of €150 → creates a deposit of €150 beforehand.

  • €20 in the reference account, buy of €300 → creates a deposit of €280.

Important: Your cash balance is included in your performance metrics. So generated transfers aren't 100% accurate – but they're much better than a negative reference account. If you maintain your deposits manually and carefully, you don't need the button.
