For many investors, their cash balance is an essential part of their portfolio allocation. You can also enter it in Parqet, and it’s deeply integrated into the rest of Parqet, so you can use all charts and details with cash too. You can also use your cash holding as a reference account (in German) if you like.
The cash feature is intentionally very flexible, so you can use it to suit your needs. You can freely choose the name of a cash holding and use it to track any kind of asset. For example, if you want to add and track an instant-access savings account, a Bausparvertrag (German home savings contract) or a fixed-term deposit separately, you can create several cash holdings and name them accordingly. A cash holding can also handle negative amounts, so you can track debts too.
In the free Basic plan, you can create up to 5 additional assets, such as cash holdings or cryptocurrencies. The limit applies across all your portfolios. With a Plus or Investor subscription, you can create unlimited cash holdings and other additional assets.
How to create a cash holding and cash activities
You can add a cash holding as an activity. To do this, click the plus icon “Add activities” at the bottom right and select “Manual”. In the window that opens, you can then select the type “Cash” at the top right:
At the top, you can name the holding, set the account currency and choose for which asset classes the account should be a reference account (in German).
A reference account mirrors your asset transactions in an account. Example: If you buy stocks for €10,000, these €10,000 are deducted from the reference account. Dividends paid out are booked to the account as a corresponding cash entry:
You can then add transactions for the cash holding right away. You can also enter costs such as taxes & fees and add a note to the transaction. Then save the transaction at the top right:
Once the cash holding is created, you can add activities to it. There are several ways to do this.
Option 1: Click the plus button at the bottom right of the screen and select “Manual”. Click “Cash” as the asset class and select the cash holding you want to add a new activity to.
Option 2: In the dashboard, click the context menu of the cash holding (three dots on the right edge of the table) and select “New activity”. The activity form opens with the correct holding already selected.
Option 3: In the dashboard, click the name of the cash holding to open its detail page. You can also add an activity to this holding with the “New activity” button at the top right.
As the activity type, you can choose Deposit, Withdrawal, Interest or Taxes & Fees. To learn how to enter interest, see Recording interest on cash holdings (in German). As usual, you can also enter taxes and fees for a deposit or withdrawal, or the exact time of the activity. When you click Save, the activity is added.
Cash holdings in the dashboard: sorted and filterable by asset class
Once you’ve created a cash holding, it’s automatically included in the portfolio value. In addition to the securities table, there is a separate table for your cash holdings. All calculations and charts also include the cash activities you’ve entered, so you get a complete overview of all your assets.
With a Plus or Investor subscription, you can filter by asset class. This lets you hide all cash holdings and see the pure performance of your securities. You can hide individual accounts, such as an instant-access savings account, with the holding filter. Save the filter as a view. Learn more: Views (in German).
Detail pages with all activities and a value chart for your cash holdings
Just like for securities, each cash holding has its own detail page. There you can see how your cash balance developed over the period you choose, the cash activities you’ve added and other detailed information. On the detail page, you can also use the Manage button to change the name of the cash holding and turn your cash holding into a reference account. To learn how, see this article (in German).
“Cash holding must be selected” when importing
The message Cash holding must be selected appears whenever you try to import an activity that can only be added to a cash holding.
This includes, among others, interest statements from your reference account.
To import these activities, go to the page of the activities where the message appeared. Click Search cash holding.
Select the cash holding you want in the dialog. Your activities are now added to that holding. If you want to create a new cash holding, you can also do this directly in the dialog.
